چکیده

Subdivision schemes are efficient computational methods for the design, representation and approximation of surfaces of arbitrary topology in R. Subdivision schemes generate curves/surfaces from discrete data by repeated refinements. This paper reviews some of the theory of linear stationary subdivision schemes and their applications in geometric modelling. The first part is concerned with “classical” schemes refining control points. The second part reviews linear subdivision schemes refining other objects, such as vectors of Hermite-type data, compact sets in Rn and nets of curves in R. Examples of various schemes are presented. Geometric conditions for tangent continuity of interpolatory planar subdivision curves

Curve subdivision is a technique for generating smooth curves from initial control polygons by repeated refinement. The most common subdivision schemes are based on linear refinement rules, which are applied separately to each coordinate of the control points, and the analysis of these schemes is well understood. Since the resulting limit curves are not sufficiently sensitive to the geometry of...

Approximation of ruled and canal surfaces by means of subdivision

Subdivision schemes were originally defined for data in affine spaces and their applications were thus restricted to polygons and polyhedra. Nowadays subdivision schemes for data in arbitrary manifolds are available and the convergence and smoothness behaviour is studied. This opens a wide field of applications and makes it posible to apply suitably modified known refinement schemes to sets of ...

Adaptive and Feature-Preserving Subdivision for High-Quality Tetrahedral Meshes

We present an adaptive subdivision scheme for unstructured tetrahedral meshes inspired by the √ 3-subdivision scheme for triangular meshes. Existing tetrahedral subdivision schemes do not support adaptive refinement and have traditionally been driven by the need to generate smooth three-dimensional deformations of solids. These schemes use edge bisections to subdivide tetrahedra, which generate...

Noninterpolatory Hermite subdivision schemes

Bivariate interpolatory Hermite subdivision schemes have recently been applied to build free-form subdivision surfaces. It is well known to geometric modelling practitioners that interpolatory schemes typically lead to “unfair” surfaces—surfaces with unwanted wiggles or undulations—and noninterpolatory (a.k.a. approximating in the CAGD community) schemes are much preferred in geometric modellin...
